Apple vs.
Android
My
husband and I have had many discussions about whether Apple or Android is the
better product. He is a MAC man all the
way and although I really don’t know much about the difference between the two,
I continue to argue for the other side. I
do this because I have only ever owned a HP laptop and my smart phone is an
Android. These are products that I am
comfortable using, but I feel that I really have no basis for my argument and
so for my PLE, I am going to research them both. At the end of the semester I hope to have a
good understanding of the pros and cons of both companies and how different
consumers decide which type of product to support. I am very curious if the technology is really
that different or if the consumer is buying the brand with the biggest
marketing budget.
I am also
very concerned about how cell phones are affecting the way we drive. It shocks me to see how many people are
driving around while texting, talking, and emailing. In fact, it scares me how often I do it
myself. So, I will also include some
research on different hands-free cellular phone accessories and how this
technology is advancing. Will we one day just have a chip implanted in our
head?
You've got some good ideas, but I think you need to work on your focus. Remember, this class is focused on technology and human values, so you need to choose a topic that will allow you to explore some aspect of values and ethics in human society that has been influenced by modern technology. The idea of buying for brand loyalty or because of marketing influence rather than practicality or need is a fascinating one. But you need to look at the phenomenon of advertising and choices, not the decision between two brands, in order to address the issues we are discussing in class. Or, if you want to focus on the idea of cell phones and driving, you might want to research the reasons why people choose to talk or text while driving, putting their own convenience above safety for themselves and others. Why DO people do that? Start doing some research and see what ideas or articles you find that you'd like to explore more, and that will help you settle on an appropriate topic for the assignment.
